Abstract

This talk will describe the environment and activities of Hôpital Albert Schweitzer in Haiti, and focus on the decisions process and different tradeoffs of implementing and using various forms of technology in this hospital.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Ian G. Rawson began his tenure as president of Hospital Council of Western Pennsylvania and its affiliated entities on May 7, 1997. Hospital Council is a regional membership association serving 89 of the region’s acute care and specialty hospitals, long-term care facilities and rehabilitation centers, as well as 29 allied and associate members from throughout the 30 counties comprising western Pennsylvania. Hospital Council has provided its membership with representation, advocacy, information, education, shared resources and management assistance for nearly 60 years. Dr. Rawson also served as President of AmeriNet Central from May 1997 to September 2002. AmeriNet Central is a membership organization that provides cost-saving opportunities through group purchasing, education, special reports, and through contracted consulting relationships. Before his position with Hospital Council, Dr. Rawson worked for the Allegheny Health, Education and Research Foundation and Allegheny General Hospital for 15 years. Prior to that, he served as an associate professor of the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public Health for seven years. He is an adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon University and at three other Pittsburgh area universities and serves as a board member or consultant for many community health organizations. Dr. Rawson received his PhD in medical anthropology in 1975 from the University of Pittsburgh and his master’s degree in political science in 1969 from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. He attended the Harvard University School of Public Health’s executive program in health planning & administration in 1990.
