Educational technology and technology aids for developing community partners

Project Kané

Project Kané is an initiative in Accra, Ghana that explores the role that technology can play in improving English literacy among children with few opportunities for guided reading practice. Implemented in collaboration with Associates for Change, Ghana, the field study makes use of the LISTEN Reading Tutor, an automated tutor developed at Carnegie Mellon University. A pilot study in the Summer of 2005 has led to a year-long research study of the effectiveness of the reading tutor compared to reading practice with an older youth.

Literacy Tools for Teaching Blind and Deaf Students

Recent V-Unit projects related to developing an Adaptive Braille Writing Tutor and interactive literacy software for the deaf are two projects geared to differently-abled students that have received significant attention from partner organizations in both the U.S. and abroad. We hope to adapt these technologies to make them more widely available for field testing in varied locations and we believe they will have a strong impact on empowering an underserved community.

TechBridgeWorld Courses Offered Abroad

Introduction to Robotics and Artificial Intelligence was offered for the first time in Summer 2006 as a unique collaboration between Ashesi University in Accra, Ghana and Carnegie Mellon University. This hands-on course challenges students to think creatively and teaches them to integrate diverse areas of knowledge to create innovative systems. Ghana’s technology industry needs technologists with the vision to apply new and innovative ideas to the wide variety of problems relevant to a growing economy. Robotics brings together computer science and engineering, resulting in systems that interact intelligently with their environment.

Open Source Online Course Repository

In development starting Fall 2006, we will make TechBridgeWorld courseware, such as syllabi, reading lists, and presentation materials available to other academic institutions to assist them in developing their own courses related to technology and development. The Introduction to Robotics and Artificial Intelligence course at Ashesi will be among the first to be included in new online course repository, along with curriculum materials from other TechBridgeWorld courses taught at Carnegie Mellon.
